Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement & Contouring

Lips are the feature patients most often ask to change and the feature most often overdone, and those two facts are related. The difference between a lip that reads as naturally full and one that announces itself is rarely the product used. It is the amount placed in a single sitting, whether the border was respected, and whether the injector was willing to stop at a result the patient would have to come back to improve.

Sam Assassa, MD is the founder of American Association of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery and has served as President since 2006. He is a certified educator for the International Academy of Aesthetics, teaching injectable technique to physicians and nurses in more than 15 countries. He founded Beverly Hills Aesthetics in 1995, is board certified in Internal Medicine, and has performed more than 25,000 aesthetic procedures.

“When I teach this technique to other physicians, the hardest thing to teach is restraint. The injecting is the easy part.” — Sam Assassa, MD

How Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement Works

Lip enhancement uses hyaluronic acid dermal filler placed in specific compartments of the lip to change volume, shape, or definition, depending on what a particular mouth needs. The work is more varied than the phrase “lip filler” suggests. Restoring a lip that has thinned with age is a different technique from shaping a lip that has always been asymmetric, and both differ from defining a border that has softened.

Hyaluronic acid is used here for a specific reason. It is a substance the body already produces, it integrates with the tissue rather than sitting apart from it, and it can be dissolved with an enzyme if the result is not what you wanted. That reversibility matters more in the lip than anywhere else on the face, because the lip is the feature people look at when they talk to you.

Lip Filler Options and What Each One Does

  • Volume Restoration: Adding fullness to lips that have thinned, whether from age or genetics, in proportion to the rest of the face.
  • Border Definition: Refining the vermillion border to restore a defined edge that has softened over time.
  • Shape Correction: Addressing asymmetry between the left and right, or between the upper and lower lip.
  • Perioral Lines: Softening the fine vertical lines above the lip that deepen with age and sun exposure.
  • Lip Flip: Using a small amount of neuromodulator to relax the muscle above the lip, rolling the upper lip slightly outward without adding volume.
  • Nanofat Lip Augmentation: Using your own processed fat for patients who prefer to avoid synthetic product.

What Lip Contouring Can and Cannot Achieve

Filler can add volume, define an edge, correct asymmetry, and improve the proportion between the upper and lower lip. What it cannot do is lengthen or shorten the distance between the nose and the lip, correct significant tooth show, or change the underlying dental and skeletal structure that determines how a smile is framed. Patients whose concern is genuinely structural are better served by a surgical lip lift, and that assessment happens at consultation rather than after treatment.

There is also a ceiling on what any single lip can hold before it stops looking like a lip. Dr. Assassa’s practice is to build gradually across visits rather than place a large volume at once, which is slower and produces a result people do not identify as filler.

What to Expect From Lip Filler Treatment in Beverly Hills

Treatment takes roughly thirty to forty-five minutes. Topical numbing is applied first and in many cases a dental style nerve block is used, and most fillers used in the lip contain lidocaine. The lip is a sensitive area and the honest description is that treatment is uncomfortable rather than painless, though it is brief and well tolerated.

Swelling is expected and it is more pronounced in the lip than anywhere else on the face. Most patients look noticeably swollen for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours, settle substantially by day three, and see the final result at about two weeks. Bruising occurs in some patients. Plan treatment at least two weeks before an event you care about, not the week of.

Lip Filler Risks and Safety

Lip filler is a medical procedure with real risks. Common effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, and temporary lumpiness as the product settles. Asymmetry can occur and is usually correctable at a follow up visit. Cold sore reactivation is possible in patients with a history of herpes simplex, and preventive medication can be arranged beforehand.

Rarely, filler injected into or compressing a blood vessel can restrict blood flow, causing tissue damage. This is uncommon and it is the principal reason to have lip filler placed by a physician with the anatomical knowledge and the products on hand to recognize and reverse a problem immediately. Individual results vary and no outcome can be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Fillers

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid filler in the lip generally lasts eight to twelve months, which is shorter than the same product placed in the cheek or jaw. The reason is movement. The lip is in near constant motion from speaking, eating, and expression, and that mechanical activity breaks the product down faster. Patients who metabolize filler quickly may see six to eight months, and most settle into a rhythm of one treatment a year.

Does lip filler hurt?

It is uncomfortable rather than painless, and any page that tells you otherwise is not being straight with you. The lip is densely supplied with nerve endings. Topical numbing is applied first, a dental style nerve block is frequently used, and the filler itself contains lidocaine, which takes effect within moments of placement. Most patients describe the first injection as the worst of it and the rest as pressure. The whole appointment runs thirty to forty-five minutes.

How much swelling should I expect after lip filler?

More than you are expecting, and this is the single most common surprise. Lips swell more than any other area treated with filler, and most patients look distinctly overfilled for the first day or two. Swelling drops substantially by day three and the final result settles at around two weeks. Do not judge your result, or book treatment close to a wedding or photograph, before that two week mark.

Can lip filler be dissolved if I do not like it?

Yes, and this is one of the strongest arguments for hyaluronic acid over any permanent alternative. An enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks the filler down within a day or two, returning the lip close to its starting point. That reversibility is a genuine safety feature rather than a marketing point, and it is why permanent lip fillers carry a risk profile that hyaluronic acid does not.

Will lip filler make my lips look fake?

That outcome comes from volume and technique, not from the product. Overfilling in a single session, ignoring the natural proportion between the upper and lower lip, and placing product outside the border are what produce the look people recognize instantly. The approach here is deliberately conservative and staged across visits, which means you may leave your first appointment wanting slightly more. That is intentional, and it is easier to add than to correct.

How much does lip filler cost in Beverly Hills?

Cost depends on the product selected and how much is required, which varies considerably between a patient restoring subtle age related volume and one making a larger change. Pricing is confirmed at your consultation and current figures across procedures are published on the fees page. Cosmetic treatment is generally not covered by insurance and several payment options are available.
