Fat Transfer. Also known as fat grafting or fat injection. A fat grafting procedure transfers fat from areas in which you have excess fat, such as the thighs or tummy, and injects it into areas that may be lacking in volume, such as your face, hands, or buttock. Fat is very rich in adult stem cells (Mesenchymal Stem Cells) which regenerate the aging tissue and rejuvenate under eyes, cheeks, chin, face, hands, and buttocks, and can fill furrows, wrinkles, and depressions. Fat transfer can also help reduce the appearance of pitted acne scars. While results are long-lasting, they should not be considered permanent.
The technique involves removing fat from one part of the body, like the thigh or tummy, and injecting it in the same individual in another part of the body. This reduces the risk of an allergic reaction. The donor area is anesthetized using a local anesthesia and the fat is harvested using small syringes. It is then prepared and immediately injected into the treatment area. Excess fat can be frozen for future fat transfer procedures.
Facial fat transfer: If you have facial creases, such as laugh lines, smile lines, and crow’s-feet, fat can be removed from your abdomen, thighs, or other areas and be injected into your face. Acne scars and sunken areas of the face, lips, and cheeks can also be filled in. Your plastic surgeon can even use grafted fat to minimize lines between your nose and mouth, correct skin depressions or indentations and minimize forehead wrinkles.
Hand rejuvenation with fat transfer: Fat grafting into your hands is effective for adding volume, “plumping up” wrinkled areas, covering underlying vessels and tendons and improving the quality of your skin over time.

Patients usually feel some discomfort during the fat harvesting, and a stinging sensation when the fat is re-injected into the treatment area. Slight swelling and bruising at the site can occur afterward.
Most patients do need to come in for a touch-up visit in 3-6 months, as some of the initial transplanted fat might dissipate, but majority of fat injected into the face remain permanently, so fewer maintenance treatments are necessary as compared to other treatments.
