What Is Preventative Botox Treatment?

Preventative Botox treatment is about getting face injections to prevent wrinkles from forming. In the past, older people were mostly the ones resorting to Botox to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. But the treatment is getting inclusive, with the younger demographic also going for preventive Botox treatments.

How Does Botox Work

Some dermatologists believe that when you begin Botox treatments at an early age, you may have to work with fewer wrinkles and fine lines as you grow older. You may also need less Botox treatment if you start young, unlike someone who begins when the wrinkles and fine lines have already formed.

Wrinkles develop when your face makes the same facial expressions repeatedly. Botox aims at working on the facial expression muscles. It does this by blocking all nerve signals to facial expression muscles. Repetitive movements from these muscles are what cause wrinkles. Botox aims at preventing such expressions and wrinkles from forming.

Procedure for Preventative Botox

During the treatment, you will lie down and relax. Your provider may ask you to make facial expressions to help see where to inject on your facial muscles. They will then inject the target area. You will likely get more than one shot.

After the injections, you may see bumps on the treated area for the first half of an hour. Your doctor may advise you not to exercise immediately after treatment, as you need to keep your face upright for a time.

Injectable Areas

Doctors administer Botox injections on the lines between the eyebrows, above your forehead, and around the eyes. Preventative Botox treatment commonly targets these areas. Some patients sometimes ask for treatment around their lips or chins to prevent smile lines. However, experts may instead recommend dermal fillers for such problems.

Side Effects and Risks

Botox is a safe treatment for people if they find a certified professional for the treatment. Preventative Botox treatment has similar side effects to those of the injection. How old you are when starting treatment will not necessarily pose a high risk of experiencing side effects.

The common side effects are:

  • Dry eyes.
  • Bruising or swelling on the injected area.
  • Flu-like symptoms and inflammation of the sinus.
  • Headache.

Preventative Botox may result in a medical emergency in rare cases. Call your doctor if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Hives or itchy rash on the injected area.
  • Lack of bladder control.
  • Blurred or double vision.
  • Breathing difficulty.

Botox lasts for three to six months. Regular use of Botox may weaken your facial muscles over time. Overdoing Botox in a specific area may make your skin appear looser and thinner. When your facial muscles become weak, they may recruit the surrounding muscles to generate a facial expression, making you need more Botox for the recruited muscles.

Preventative Botox may also pose the risk of having a locked or frozen facial expression resulting from the relaxing muscle effect caused by Botox.

How to Find a Professional

The success of the treatment is highly dependent on the provider you decide on. Identify a certified, well-trained, and experienced plastic surgeon or a cosmetic dermatologist for this procedure.
