Drooping of the face and neck is caused by the sagging of the sub dermal facial layer, called the Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System. SMAS functions as a suspension to overlying skin and soft tissue. As we age this becomes loose causing the skin and fat pads to gravitate, giving the face a sad and tired expression. Lifting and fixing the SMAS in a better position causes repositioning of soft tissue and facial structures thus restoring the facial contour. Traditionally this has always been accomplished by an "open" surgical technique.
