Why Your Yoga Instructor is Mad at You
You love yoga. It relaxes you and works those muscles. It’s tranquil and you get some time for you.
So why then, in such a warm and welcoming environment where people barely speak and the focus is on relaxing, would your yoga instructor yell at you?
First, it’s important to keep in mind that yoga instructors are very involved in their practice and their beliefs. They take their instruction and education very seriously so it’s disrespectful for a person to go into their class and not be as focused as they should be.
Another thing to keep in mind that could really anger your instructor, is drinking water. What?! Yes, as important as it is to stay hydrated and make sure you get enough water, during a yoga class, your instructor could feel that when you break for water before it’s time, you are essentially putting out the fire that keeps you going. Be weary of when you go for your water bottle.
Another way to make your instructor mad (and that is not what we are suggesting) is to stray from the poses he or she instructs. Your instructor spent a lot of time and put a great deal of thought into the class and the poses they want their students to do. When you start doing your own thing in class it’s a sign of disrespect for all the work they put into their lesson.
Do you sweat a lot during yoga? Some instructors might feel like wiping away your sweat is a distraction from your breathing. That said, nobody likes sweat dripping down their face. Maybe grab that towel while they’re focused on something else. You’ll feel better and your eyes won’t be clouded with salty sweat.
And if sweat dripping down you wasn’t enough, yoga instructors also find it extremely distracting when you constantly adjust your clothes. It’s definitely annoying to have your shirt ride up during downward facing dog, but as a yoga student, it’s good practice to make sure your clothes fit right. Maybe invest in some good yoga outfits. You’ll feel more comfortable moving around in them and you’ll have a better chance of staying on your instructor’s good side.
Probably one of the two worst things you can do is talk during yoga class. Many people go to yoga with a friend or two so it can become really easy to look over and giggle, talk about your day, or just chit chat during class. Not only will this really anger your instructor, but you’ll probably have an entire room full of people wanting to yell at you.
The other one of the two worst things you can do during a yoga class is leave early. Those routines are carefully planned and the instructor ties it all together at the end of class. When you leave early, your instructor can easily add you to their blacklist. Be sure to schedule enough time for an entire class before you start.
